G is for Game of Thrones

*This weekend was really rough over at the Bird's Nest. The Husband and I had to say goodbye to a good  friend who lost his battle with leukemia. He was actually in the hospital waiting for his bone marrow transplant (his sister was all prepped and ready to go) but he never even got the chance to have the operation; his heart gave out. He left behind a beautiful wife Gabrielle, a ten year old son named David, four sisters who are just devastated and a ton of family and friends who are really going to miss him.  I have to be honest and tell you my heart is a bit broken. The funeral is this afternoon and I'm not certain how I'm going to hold it together and be there for my friend Gabby (his wife).  But I'm going to do my best. Thankfully (for once) I had my letter "G" post all written and ready to go in advance. I just wanted everyone to know what was going on so if you don't see any comments from me today, you would understand why.*

Oh man, I'm such a Game of Thrones fangirl I couldn't wait to type this post! I turn into a HUGE blob of nerd when it comes to George R. R. Martin and his books. And I'm really loving the series on HBO. I think the writers and actors (especially Peter Dinklage) are doing a stand up job of adapting Martin's books and characters.

One of my favorite characters is Dani a/k/a Daenerys Stormborn. Here's one of my all time favorite kick-ass quotes of hers:

"Woman?” She chuckled. “Is that meant to insult me? I would return the slap, if I took you for a man.” Dany met his stare. “I am Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, khaleesi to Drogo’s riders, and queen of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.”

Ha ha- suck on that title!! She is made of awesome. One of the things I love so much about her is her strength and resilience. All of the female characters in Martin's books just kick ass, but to me, she is the toughest of them all.

Despite having an evil twin brother Viserys, who has tried to slap her down and keep her under his thumb her whole life and who eventually decides to sell her in marriage to Khol Drogo, she finds a way to come out of the situation, victorious. The Dothraki are known to be a vicious, hard-core, savage people and Khol Drogo was King of them all. Somehow, Dani managed to tap into the softer side of her husband and win him over, finding a genuine respect and true love for one another.  (I love that she referred to her husband, "Shekh ma shieraki anni" Dothraki for my sun and stars and Khal Drogo tenderly referred to her as "Yer jalan atthirari anni" or moon of my life )

When she looses her beloved husband and her son, the people expect her to crumble. But not Dani. She walks through fire, (literally) and comes out, unburnt, on the other side. She has proven herself to be a woman who is not to be trifled with. One that is strong-willed, determined and not so easily defeated.  I don't know about you but I am looking forward to seeing her continue on her journey to  take back her rightful place as the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

Who's your favorite George R.R. Martin character? Love the books, and/or the TV series? How do you feel HBO is doing in adapting the books?  What's your favorite quote or scene? Anyone else trying to learn Dothraki, like me, lol? Here's one of my fav scenes from Season I. But be warned- if you've never seen this before, it's totally rad, but equally gruesome...

I'm truly in awe of Martin's writing and the level of depth to each of his characters. Dani just fascinates me!

We have the same choice for letter G today! :D

I love Dany too, and greatly admire her strength. Though I'm not a hundred percent convinced she'll make the best queen. Another strong female I love is Sansa Stark, and have a feeling she's soon going to step from being the victim to the victor. My idea scenario is Westeros split into two, with Dany as Queen of the South and Sansa as Queen of the North.

    1. Hey Love! Thank you. It was a really tough weekend.

Look at that, we do have the same letter G today- but of course, you did a MUCH better job than I did with my post!! You are so organized and your ideas always come across well thought out and clear. (Unlike my jumbled mess of thoughts. I think and write more like stream of consciencness- all over the place, lol)

I have been wondering where Martin is leading Sansa's character. I think there is a whole lot more to come with her too. I like how you think- Dany Queen of the South and Sansa Queen of the North- I never thought of that, but I really like the idea, now that you proposed it.

  4. Enjoyed reading GoT so far, although Martin gets away with an awful lot of 'wandering in the woods', literally. I guess that's what happens when you a star. I don't have TV so I have to wait for the series to come out on DVD and rent it. The first season was great, I thought, but the second was a bit disappointing. It felt like they were cramming so much info into too short a time period. Little vingettes that were way to short. But, I'll probably keep watching.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your friend. That is so hard. I know you'll be a strong support to his wife. Hang in there.

    1. I hear what your saying about the wandering, and I don't know why I like it when George Martin does it. Usually it bothers or bores me. But with him, it's the little details that he adds in his world building that I love the most.

And thanks. I'm a total disaster. Not much of support ot myself, much less anyone else. But I'm going to do my best. After the wakes and funeral are done, when it's all over and everybody goes home, that's when most people fall apart. Hopefully, I'll be able to help her in the long term.

  5. I absolutely love this show, but have yet to read the books. That's next on my to-read list, and from what I keep hearing, I will not be disappointed.

    1. I always love the books more than the movie, (or TV show in this case). But I am truly loving both, so far. HBO has gone to great lengths, I think, to capture the true essence of the stories. I'm really happy with what they've done. But you must read the books! Because I think you're right, I don't think you will be disappointed.

And you should totally watch GOT! You are certainly tough enough to take it. You watch all of that gruesome horror stuff, I don't think all the fighting and gore of GOT would bother you, at all. :)

    1. Hi Suzanne! Thank you so much. I appreciate it. I could really use that hug this morning, for sure.

I can't endorse GOT enough. I even got my brother, (who is notoriously stubborn about listening to my recommedations) to become hooked on the books and show. He's all caught up now and can't wait for the new season. It was SO satisfying to hear him say, "You were right. I loved it." LOL

As a matter of fact, he's probably one of the best casts I've ever seen. I don't know about you, but he is exactly how I pictured Tyrion to be, in my head.

  13. So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and hope you can find comfort in his memory.

I'm not a huge Game of Throne's fan, but love the series he edited way back in the 80s and 90s...Wild Cards. Now they should make -that- into a miniseries! :)

    Take care and best wishes.

Martin has been around and writing for a long, long time. I am surprised we haven't seen more from him and his collection.

  15. I'm so sorry for your loss! What a tragic, terrible thing. Like with your sister, it is so impossible to understand why young people lose their lives, leaving behind families that need them.
    Big hugs to you!

I had not read or seen Game of Thrones until Easter Weekend. I was watching my friend's dog, and I went over their house to watch cable since I don't have it. Game of Thrones was on On Demand for free, so I started watching it, and spent the entire weekend doing that, I loved it so much. I'm now watching season 2 online at Amazon. Not sure how I'll get to watch Season 3, but I'll figure it out.

Dani is my favorite character, too! I loved how she went from someone abused and meek, and turned into this amazingly strong woman. I LOVED her and Drogo's relationship and was shocked and sad when he died. My brother tells me that Martin regularly kills off major characters. I was also completely shocked when Ned Stark was killed. It's crazy, and phew there is a ton of nudity, but it's such a good show. Now I want to read the books. Can't believe I haven't.

    1. Thanks so much K- I appreciate it. And I'll take that virtual hug.

What you did is exactly what my brother did! My sister and I kept telling him the show and books were fab, but he didn't listen. Then all of a sudden, one weekend, he got sucked in and watched all the shows. Now he loves it too.

And yeah, one thing you should know right up front about Martin and his books, almost all of your fav characters will die a horrible death. It's pretty crazy. But then, another one of his characers will take over and capture your heart. Until they die a horrible death too. LOL

  16. She plays that character so very well. Excellent books. Excellent series.

On the other news, my sincerest sympathies. Passing is always hard for those left behind, but when there are younger children, it's doubly difficult. I pray they find a measure of peace amongst the grief.

And thank you so much for your kind, gracious words. What you said is so true, it is always hard to loose a loved one, but when someone leaves behind a young child, it's brutal. Thank you for your prayers, I appreciate that so much.

  20. I LOVE Game of Thrones!! I just watched the first episode of Series 3 today. My problem is that I've forgotten what I've read v what I've seen, but the first ep of S3 refreshed my memory. As much as I love the HBO series, I have found (like all TV adaptations) that it's has skewed my 'favourite' character thoughts as I am now basing them on the actors rather than my imagination from the books. But it would have to be Arya I think, although Peter Dinkage plays an incredible role as well.

    1. LOL, I generally tend to have a memory like that too. But I love this series and have read the books multiple times so this doesn't happen so much to me where GOT is concerned.

I understand what you are saying, because I had a very hard time with the HBO series True Blood. Allan Ball took it to SUCH a different place than the books, I started to dislike characters I once loved. I stopped watching it after a while because it really started to tick me off that much. Books, will always remain better than TV or movies, in my mind.
